Mother's Day Special: how to make your mum a part of your wedding

mum daughter phone

In continuing our celebration of all things mum in the lead-up to Mother's Day, we thought we'd share some special ways to incorporate your mum into your wedding celebrations. Here's how you can say “Thank you and I love you", by giving mum an important role and making her a VIP guest on your wedding day. Mum's the word As your lifelong supporter and most likely your biggest fan, your mum will play a very special role on your journey down the aisle both beforehand and on the day itself. For many couples, involving mum in special ways in their wedding celebrations is a way of saying thank you for all of the effort, energy and love she showers on you each and every day.

  1. Involve her

How involved your mum is in the lead-up to your wedding is entirely up to you, but don't exclude her completely. Mums like to have specific jobs to do to make them feel part of the planning process. So, whether you give her one or two elements to be responsible for (ordering wedding invitations, sourcing wedding favours or selecting table centrepieces) or involve her in every decision you make, remember she is potentially just as excited as you are for your big day.

  1. Take her dress shopping

One of the things mums look forward to the most about their little girl or daughter-in-law getting married is helping to choose the dress. If it's not geographically possible for the two of you to shop together, involve her by sending her images of different dress styles and brands you like, ask her to do some online research on your behalf and listen to her opinion (even if you have to agree to disagree).

  1. Take mum down the aisle

Increasingly brides are opting for both parents to walk them down the aisle, in recognition of all the work mum has done in getting you to this point. Alternatively, mum can wait at the top of the aisle, with both parents officially agreeing to ‘giving you away' when the priest or celebrant asks the question.

  1. Wedding day jobs

Just like the planning and preparation phase, mums want to feel useful on the day of your wedding. Assign her a specific area of responsibility that she can manage throughout the day (but make sure she has time to enjoy herself too). Mums often come in very useful as a key contact for suppliers, vendors and guests on the wedding day to give the bride some breathing space to relax and enjoy the event.

  1. Acknowledge her

In most cases your mum will have worked tirelessly to ensure your big day is everything you dreamed of and more. Acknowledge her hard work, love and support with a mention in the speeches, toast in her honour or presentation of a Mother-of-the-Bride gift. Say thank you not just for the role she has played in your wedding, but for a lifetime of unconditional love, selflessness and sacrifice on this day and every day.
